The White Room
Cotehele House – Cornwall
Taking its name from the curtains and bed-hangings, the White Room is the only one with a decorated ceiling, thought to be an example of 18th Century antiquarianism.
Cotehele is reputedly haunted by the ghost of a young girl who 'regularly' appears to visitors.
However, this room is the site of a real Ghost Story.
One of the owners was entertaining and realised that there was insufficient beds for his guests, so to avoid any embarrassment, he decided to let one of the guests use this bed and he would sleep in the closet (the room through the door on the left).
After the guest had retired for the night, the owner sat up with other guests then eventually decided to turn in for the night.
Unfortunately, he had forgotten to tell the guest in this room of his intention, so as he walked through the room, he disturbed the guest who saw this apparition apparently walking through the wall and thought he had seen a ghost.
If you look closely you can see that the doorway is actually cut out of the tapestry so when the door is closed it becomes 'invisible'.
So thinking the owner had walked through the wall was quite an easy mistake to make :-))
Elegant white living room: Architectural details + 'Clunch' by Farrow & Ball
The living room of interior designer Phoebe Howard’s Atlanta apartment. Walls are painted Farrow & Ball's Clunch, a soft warm white.
She turned an antique French tapestry into one long rectangular pillow because she prefers the large shape to that of many small throw pillows. The room's showpiece is a George III gilded mirror with a broken pediment. Curtains in Schumacher cotton sateen are tucked directly under the cornice. An English mahogany breakfast table serves as an oversize side table.
Her husband, architect James Howard, installed classical revival paneling with acanthus corbels and moldings. The ceilings are only eight and a half feet, but by using an egg-and-dart cornice that projects into the rooms and onto the ceilings, rather than one that sits flat on the walls, he created the illusion of greater height.
